SUCCESS STORY: GUNNAR

We recently received this update from Gunnar’s mom. “So almost four years ago I got a call from Crissy (a shelter volunteer) and she told me she had found the perfect dog for me. I needed to come up and meet him. So I planned a weekend drove up and met Gunnar. I was really fortunate he actually liked me and I got to bring him home that weekend. He has been a pleasure.

You would think being blind that it would make it difficult for him to maneuver, however he has managed to make it around the whole house and the yard without hitting anything a second time. He really loves to sleep with the kids; actually he likes to sleep with anybody – he’ll start out in a small ball and by the end of the night he has 3/4 of the bed. He likes full body hugs when my daughter flaps down on him his tail and just wags back and forth. When he’s not happy and he wants outside he will turkey call; we have yet to get it on video but we’re trying.

He has brought so much joy and pleasure to our lives. He talks grumbles mumbles and is one of the most stubbornest males in our lives. I have two daughters 23 and 20 he loves them both.”

SUCCESS STORY UPDATE: MS PUDGE

Pudge has been enjoying life with Dan, Sue, Olive and Herbie since late last year. Here’s an update we just received:

“Pudge loves the current stay-in-place order.   She is very good at staying in place.  One place…for a long time…until dinner.  Then she is happy to move from her spot in the sun to her dinner bowl.  We have enjoyed spending oodles of time with our old greyhound and new to us bundle of love. Pudge continues to amaze us with her many noises.  There seems to be a new one for every occasion.  There’s one for scratching her ears, another for rubbing her belly, and yet another for enjoying a good meal.  Our greyhounds (Olive and Herbie) are quiet and graceful, yet we love the Cacophony of Pudge. She snores like chainsaw at full throttle, but chirps happily while eating a treat. She has also mastered the art of weaving between the greyhound legs during walks.  Despite her rotund physique, she stealthily finishes their dinners and beats them to every sunbeam before they know it. We love this furry package! Thanks to all of the staff and volunteers at the Clatsop County Animal Shelter! You have brought our furry soulmate home :)”

SUCCESS STORY: SLIPPERS

Here’s an update on Slippers, who has been in her forever home for three and a half years now after spending almost a year at the shelter.

“I met Slippers on October 18, 2016. A ‘tug on your heart’ Facebook post about her led me into the shelter that day. I could tell the kind ladies at the desk were surprised I asked specifically to see Slippers. Apparently, this future sweetie of mine was a long-time resident (almost an entire year by then) with very few visitors and a reputation of being quite a brat. I was told she spent a lot of time facing the back of her cage, she barely ate or drank, she stopped cleaning herself, she was prone to UTIs and was believed to be at the beginning stages of kidney failure… requiring special food. I think she was so sad from watching all of her shelter friends get adopted 🙁 I remember thinking she was soo small and soo stinking cute! How in the heck is this kitty still here and not adopted?!

Her cage door was opened and I held out my hand. I was prepped that she’d likely stay at the back of her cage and might even hiss… instead, she slowly walked to my hand and pressed her little face against it shocking both me and the shelter volunteer.

That’s all it took for me to fall in love. I knew almost nothing about cat ownership but with the amazing help from the shelter and my awesome boyfriend who also loves cats, Slipper’s came home with me that very day. I don’t know why no one took a chance on her before or why she was so sweet to me that day. The romantic in me believes she was just waiting for me to get there. 🙂

Fast forward a few years and Slippers is doing so well!
She takes luxurious naps allll day on a warmer.
She comes running if she thinks you’re eating tortilla chips.
She paws at the covers every night when she’s ready to snuggle. She has super soft but very straight fur, it sticks up on her back like a Stegosaurus and she loves to shove her head into your face for kisses… haha.. that’s one of my favorite things about her!

She gets a kidney panel checked annually and is doing well! We love her so much we became volunteers at the animal shelter to help spread more love in our community! Shout out to the incredible staff and volunteers at the Clatsop county animal shelter – they are doing such AMAZING work!

Slippers is the absolute most sweetest kitty … she has brought me so much healing, companionship (friendship), hope, joy and love. I am so grateful that she chose me.
Her name at the shelter was Slippers and it was so fitting we couldn’t change it!
But here a few of her nicknames: Slipski, Slips, Slippidi-do-da, Slipparian, Slippers from the streets, Bunny, Bunny Rabbit, Steg, Stegski and Janet.”

SUCCESS STORY: VALIANT

Valiant’s family is working hard to bring out the best in him. Here’s what they wrote last week:

“Our family came to visit Valiant four separate times in February 2020. While we had concerns, based on what we had heard with how he was with other dogs and children…we talked in depth as a family about the pros & cons…but in the end, we all agreed that there was something that we all saw in him, that we knew, with love and time, that we could hopefully bring to the forefront. We brought him home on March 4th, and we have worked with him every day…on his manners, on not taking off and running away at the first chance when the door opens (which happened 4 times), as well as being nice to other dogs, cats and people he doesn’t know. He’s learning to play with 3 little dogs, that belong to our oldest daughter and her boyfriend. He responds well to verbal cues, in both English and German, and we’re teaching him sign language also. He loves going for rides in cars and trucks and gives us great snuggles. He LOVES his tennis balls, playing in water at home and running in the ocean.

While we have only had him for a few short months, and we know we still have work ahead of us, he is SO smart and has improved so much already, and his trust and respect of us has started to grow as well. Valiant is almost 3 years old and while he has had a lot happen in his life before us, he has made great strides so far and we expect that by this time next year…with continued love, patience and time, we will have an even more amazing dog than we already have!”

SUCCESS STORY: LOKI

Loki was adopted early this summer and we hear he is doing very well. “On a fine June day I ventured to Warrenton to see Mr. Loki. I was totally blown away with his pic with the blue tie. I was equally happy to see him play and be friendly. He has fit in real well with the family. Max, my 18 year old cat, and Loki take naps together. Loki loves the dog park and playing with his ball. I am very happy with our new addition and pray we have a long relationship.”
