Success Story Sunday – Mabel, Miloh and Gideon

Lisa tells us, “I’ve been a volunteer with Clatsop Animal Assistance (CAA) for three years. I started volunteering shortly after my two dogs, who were 13 and 15, passed away from old age within a short time of each other. For the first time in my life, I didn’t have any canine companions. I missed them so much, but I wasn’t ready to adopt again. Instead, I threw myself into my new role as a dog walker at the shelter. The sense of community, the physical work, and taking care of 25+ dogs in need helped me work through the grief and heal.

I always worried I wouldn’t make a good volunteer—either I’d want to take all the dogs home or wouldn’t be able to handle the heartache. And yes, there are emotional ups and downs, but the rewards definitely outweigh the tough moments. I’ve learned that there’s someone for every dog; it just takes patience and time. Since our shelter space is limited, we rely on fosters to help when we’re full, or when animals need extra care. That’s how my fostering journey started.

My first foster was an 8-week-old puppy named Mabel, who came to us all by herself and was too young to be in the shelter alone. I brought her home with the plan to foster her temporarily, but that lasted about a month before my husband and I adopted her. Then came Miloh. He was struggling at the shelter, but when we took him on off-site field trips, he showed his true colors—he was great in public, an awesome hiking companion, and just an all-around good boy. Unfortunately, that wasn’t obvious in the kennel where his anxiety was overwhelming him. Shepherd/husky mixes, like Miloh, often need more physical and mental stimulation than what we can offer with our limited shelter resources. We fostered him to give him a break, and the time he needed to find a home, but he quickly became Mabel’s loving big brother.

My final foster fail (and yes, I mean final!) was Gideon, another husky mix. He was completely shut down in the shelter, terrified of strangers, and had stopped eating and drinking. He needed a stable home and a pack to help him heal, so we took him in. I never imagined having three dogs, but now I can’t imagine life without them. These dogs are our family and we take them on all of our adventures.

Even with three of our own, my husband and I still make time for the shelter dogs. Somehow, we’ve found balance in caring for them all, and I can honestly say my heart is full. And when the day comes, far in the future, when we have to say goodbye, I know there will always be more to love.”

~ Lisa, Bryan, Mabel, Miloh, & Gideon

Muffin is our KMUN, THE ASTORIAN, 94.9 THE BRIDGE, WARRENTON KIA, and HITS 94.3 KRKZ Pet of the Week for the week of September 8, 2024

Don’t let her name fool you, Muffin is no wall flower. At 15+, this mature black beauty has been around the block a few times. Despite her age, she rolled around on the scratching pad like a kitten this afternoon. She’s confident in who she is and what she wants – meow!! Muffin has short dense fur and a small, bright white patch on her chest. She also has a bit of a droopy tummy, some missing teeth and white whiskers! She has a lot to say in a bossy old gal sort of way and has a quirky way she swallows that makes it seem like she has a hair stuck on her tongue that she just can’t shake. Muffin scored big and gets to spend her time in a nice foster home. She’s quite a character and has shown how happy she can be in a quiet home environment. Her foster person reports that the biggest change since Muffin moved out of the shelter is that she is a lover. She still doesn’t like to be picked up, but she’ll put up with it as long as you’re quick, and her destination is a lap. She likes to sit in a lap and will settle down quickly to be petted. If you get distracted and stop petting her, she puts her front paws on your chest and rubs her head against you until you pet her. Once she’s satisfied, she leans against your shoulder for a while to be petted more. In summary, Muffin’s an older gal who needed a little time to adjust to her surroundings. She’s a very sweet cat once she settles in. She’s not a kitten any more, but if someone is looking for a low key friend who is fine with just hanging out, she`ll be a great companion. She’s also a terrific lap cat who will come and tell you when she needs to be in your lap – even though she’ll gripe about being picked up. If you think you could give Muffin her forever home, please call the shelter and make an appointment to meet this special girl. Or ask to have a conversation with the fosterer to learn even more about her.

Rory is our KMUN, THE ASTORIAN, 94.9 THE BRIDGE, WARRENTON KIA, and HITS 94.3 KRKZ Pet of the Week for the week of September 1, 2024

Rory is a two-year-old husky mix with cream & tan fur and dazzling light brown eyes. As a young gal, Rory loves to get out and enjoy the world. She is curious and happy walking along our wooded trails and enjoys every toy in our play yard. Her love of play helps Rory do well with most dogs in our playgroups. She likes to be the Queen Bee among her playmates and will need to meet any dogs in the family before adoption. Rory can be momentarily shy when meeting new people but opens up her heart quickly and will make the most loving new pal. We’ve learned just how smart she is. Rory doesn’t want us to leave at night and we have to coax her into the inside part of her indoor-outdoor kennel so we can close her in, using treats we toss onto her bed. That trick stopped working when she figured out how to stand in the doorway and pull the bed close enough with her paw to get the treat without coming all the way inside. Genius!
